Q:I'm a exchange student from South Korea, finding a waiver plans that match my budget.I'm aware of the fact that i will be staying in the US for 5 months or less, which means I will be exempt from the ACA compliant rule. However, the School strictly requires us to find plans that is compliant to the ACA in order to waive their SHIP.Could you clarify whether the university has the authority to set a rule requiring ACA-compliant insurance, even though such compliance is not explicitly mandated under J-1 visa regulations? Additionally, as a J-1 visa holder, I am wondering if I am subject to this requirement or if there are exemptions that might allow me to meet the insurance waiver criteria without ACA compliance.

A:
If your school has an ACA requirement to attend their program unfortunately you will have to take the insurance provided by them. It is increadibly difficult for a J-visa holder to aquire ACA insurance without a sponsoring organization purchasing on their behalf so most students can only take their schools insurance.
